A Real Hi-Fi Wedding: Sarah & Dave, Old Cali Style
I met Sarah a few years ago on livejournal (wha wha?!) and I’m so excited that she was willing to share her gorgeous wedding with us today! I’ll never forget when I first saw her wedding photos…absolutely stunning, in every sense. When I ask brides to submit their wedding, I only ask one simple question “why is music so important to you?” and her answer is as followed:
Music is what brought Dave and I together! We spent the first several months of our relationship comparing our favorite Whiskeytown tunes and arguing over what the best “rock out” of all time was (Paul McCartney at the end of Hey Jude HANDS DOWN I WIN!). The way Dave got my attention in the first place was by telling me “You’re taste in music is too good for your own good.” Be still my heart!! We both think that with music, through music, and by listening to music together you can express a lot of things that are hard to say sometimes. We made each other mixes of course, spent a lot of time just exposing each other to new music… and we just knew once we were engaged that music was going to be the centerpiece of our marital event. And marrying a musician was pretty important to me, though maybe I wouldn’t have said that out loud at one time. I always wanted to be a muse!
There is a photo in there of our programs which has all the ceremony music but basically it went like this-
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
Wedding Day by Alejandro Escovedo
A Summer Song by Chad and Jeremy
Here Comes My Baby by Cat Stevens – this is what I walked down to. If you listen too closely to the lyrics this seems a bit odd to use for this purpose but we didn’t overthink it, haha
That’s How Strong My Love Is sung by our friends Davey Mechelle and Brian Whelan… both kick ass musicians in their own right.
You Really Got Me Now by The Kinks was the recessional. There is a funny story about this, basically that I told Dave I wanted this played at my wedding on like, our second date? Then we both got really quiet and awkward because I said the “W” word and I figured I had probably scared him off at the point. Guess not! haha
The band that played our reception are friends of ours called The Vaquetones and they fit perfectly into the “Old California” theme we did… Between their sets we played a lot of prince, pheonix, michael jackson, and old soul.

It truly was a most unusual, lovely wedding for two unique people, my son Dave, and beautiful daughter-in-law, Sarah.
