A Real Hi-Fi Wedding: Lauren & Dave’s DJ Magic
This stunning wedding combines Dave and Lauren’s love for jazz and vinyl. I adore how their personalities shined through in both the photos and music. Lauren raves on about her darling dear Dave:
Dave’s favorite hobby is playing and mixing records, which he’s done since high school. He is a DJ in the truest sense of the word, playing only vinyl and using an old school manual mixer, no computer, no Serato, just headphones. Since starting this hobby, Dave has recorded an annual DJ mix to share with his friends so it was only natural that he do the same for our wedding guests. While I stamped the CD covers, he compiled the mix comprised of a few favorites in our home, songs that speak to our town of Los Angeles, and those regularly played at his Canal St. loft parties when we lived in NYC. Although it mostly consists of disco (his genre of choice), he surprised me with the last song by slowing it down for one of “our” songs by Beach House. You can find the entire track list below.
Additionally, it was only natural that on the day, I give Dave a record to add to his expansive collection that would commemorate our wedding day. I chose Disco Wedding by Paul Jabara. I had never heard the song but it turned out to be a true gem.
Lauren includes: As a testament to my love for jazz vocalists, we opted to use the classics for our “moments.” They were all performed live by the incredibly talented Mateo Stoneman. Mateo, also known in LA as the Gringo Mariachi, played classic boleros and his original music during the cocktail hour and Mexican buffet dinner.
Ceremony
Processional: What Wonderful World / originally performed by Louis Armstrong
Bridal Processional: At Last / originally performed by Etta James
Recessional: L-O-V-E / originally performed by Nat King Cole
First Dance: La Vie En Rose / English version originally performed by Louis Armstrong
Parent Dance: The Way You Look Tonight / originally performed by Frank Sinatra
It was also important to us that we find a DJ who had a traditional turntable set-up so that Dave could do a little session, because it wouldn’t have been our wedding without it. Brian from I’m a Girl DJ turned out to be a great fit and Dave played five or six songs, including a Billy Ocean edit, a Spanish cover of “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” and of course, Jeffrey Osborne’s unforgettable ode to romantic travel, “Plane Love”.
